Salt Mama Portraits

Why Granderella?

There is a true beauty that comes with age. I believe it’s entwined within the wisdom of life. I’m looking forward to exploring this thought through my next project – Granderella🖤.

The Grandmothers, the Elders, the Wise Women, the Crones

My hope is to hold a space for Grandmothers to be themselves – to be seen and heard – culminating in an exhibition of portraits and accompanying stories early next year.

I love to shake things up a little and I don’t know about you, but I’m a bit tired of hearing the rhetoric of female aging. You know the comments – “Ooh, time hasn’t been kind to her!” or “Wow, she looks rough!” amongst so many others. Even as women ourselves, a great deal of us are trying to hide our authentic selves with “anti-aging this”, injectables and skin-peels. I wish we loved ourselves more…just as we are. I wish aging women were seen in the same light as aging men. Women are like a good bottle of red that just gets better with age.

Your Story is written in the Lines of your face

Don’t water down your story – love your story because it’s shaped you. Let’s face it too, we all know life isn’t a fairy tale and there’s no Prince Charming there to save us. She’s probably a Granderella! I remember seeing a photo a while ago and while I can’t find again to share here, it’s etched into my brain. A monochrome portrait of a Wise Women, her graying her blowing in the wind, the lines on her face worn with pride. I fell in love with that photograph and now I want to take it a step further, adding in connection and power. I can’t wait to see where this project leads!

“I no longer have patience for certain things, not because I’ve become arrogant, but simply because I reached a point in my life where I do not want to waste more time with what displeases me or hurts me. I have no patience for cynicism, excessive criticism and demands of any nature. I lost the will to please those who do not like me, to love those who do not love me and to smile at those who do not want to smile at me.

I no longer spend a single minute on those who lie or want to manipulate. I decided not to coexist anymore with pretense, hypocrisy, dishonesty and cheap praise. I do not tolerate selective erudition nor academic arrogance. I do not adjust either to popular gossiping. I hate conflict and comparisons. I believe in a world of opposites and that’s why I avoid people with rigid and inflexible personalities. In friendship I dislike the lack of loyalty and betrayal. I do not get along with those who do not know how to give a compliment or a word of encouragement. Exaggerations bore me and I have difficulty accepting those who do not like animals. And on top of everything I have no patience for anyone who does not deserve my patience.” – José Micard Teixeira

Love this quote. I always thought it was written by Meryl Streep and as soon as I started writing this blog post, I wanted it to be a part of it. After a little digging though, it’s not a quote by Ms Streep (thanks meme-creators of social media), it is in fact the work of Portuguese self-help author/life coach José Micard Teixeira.

“We live in a youth-obsessed culture that is constantly trying to tell us that if we are not young, and we’re not glowing, and we’re not hot, that we don’t matter. ” Oprah. I found this in this article on Aging and Getting Older – 25 quotes from famous women. Some great advice there.

Let’s make the time to sit and talk…and listen. The Wise Women of our families, our communities,  deserve a little more “Grand”!

I’m currently looking for participants! To apply, you’ll need to be over 60, a Grandmother, proud of your laugh-lines and available for a weekday portrait shoot in my Ipswich Studio. Interested? The best way to get in touch with me is to call the studio on 07 3466 3481 or email me at

So there’s my why. Geez, I hope that makes some sense. I have a million thoughts running rampant through my mind and it’s tricky to focus on just one. 😉
