It was a few months ago now that a friend of mine gave me the book “The life changing magic of tidying up”. “Catchy title” I thought, but I wondered what I could really learn from it. After all, in my bones I know that the state of your ‘space’ reflects the state of your mind, I am a neat freak and I’m not a hoarder. The book sat in my drawer for two months.
I opened that drawer one day and saw the book. I decided that it was high time I gave it back but before I did, I might just give it a little challenge. I opened it to a random page and decided that if I learned nothing new, back it would go that day.
That was the day I learned about folding my clothes to see all the colours and I discovered that I didn’t know as much as I thought I did. I gave the book back two days later after reading it from cover to cover. That weekend I tidied my house and got rid of everything that didn’t bring me joy. The family got in on it too!
I never anticipated to roll on effect it would have. I tidied my gardens, my car, I even tidied the pages I ‘like’ on facebook. Ultimately, I “tided” my life and what’s left brings me nothing but joy. Man, it’s good.
Life is easier with less stuff, joy is simpler. My daughter is back to playing the drums on an upside down bin and singing at the top of her lungs. She paints rainbows and her life is brimming with imagination & magic.
I have one last thing to tidy – the 1000’s of photos on my hard drive. Oh yes, I’ve saved the best till last! I know a lot of parents in the same boat when it comes to sorting out the ‘pix’, so I’ll share some of my best tips to make the journey a little easier in a blog post soon.
